Immersion heaters
Immersion heaters are used to heat liquids, air or gases in tanks and containers or as machine or system components. ELMESS-Thermosystemtechnik provides the most suitable immersion heaters according to the individual requirements of our customers. These are developed and manufactured in high-quality industrial versions and also in explosion-proof versions in accordance with ATEX, IECEx, etc. We therefore guarantee a high degree of reliability, safety and durability for your systems.
Designs
- Heaters with a heating bundle made of tubular heating elements or in cartridge design with replaceable heating units. Temperature limiters and monitors or Pt100 temperature probes are installed to protect the heater.
- Flange or screw-in heater design.
- Heaters for liquids (HF) or gases (HG)
- Made of stainless steel or special materials for improved corrosion resistance
- UL certificate for safe area
Ex immersion heaters
- Explosion-proof immersion heaters for use in potentially explosive areas in zones 1 and 2, as well as zones 21 and 22.
- Ignition protection types Ex d, Ex de or Ex e, for gas group IIC or IIB+H2
- Ex d enclosure made of cast iron, steel or stainless steel
- Temperature limiters and monitors or Pt100 temperature probes are installed to comply with the temperature class.
Cartridge Type Heaters
With replaceable heating units made of ceramic heating elements or tubular heating elements.
Explosion-proof design or for safe areas.
Applications:
- Oil tanks
- Lubricating oil systems
- Heating of corrosive media
L-shaped Heaters
For installation in a tank from above. The heater can be replaced without emptying the tank. Heating unit made of stainless steel tubular heating elements, riser pipe and mounting flange made of steel or stainless steel. The mounting flange shape can be configured according to customer specifications, e.g. as a tank lid.
Explosion-proof design or for safe areas.
Applications:
- Oil tanks
- Lubricating oil systems
- Pump sump heater
ASME immersion heaters
Immersion heaters for installation in ASME-approved vessels are manufactured as EIH (electric immersion heater) element support plates. The basis is the MS (manufacturer’s standard) developed by ELMESS together with CIS-TÜV Thüringen. The immersion heaters supplied in accordance with this standard are approved by the ASME inspector during overall acceptance of the vessel in accordance with ASME VIII, Div. 1.
Technical details:
- Power: Ex d up to approx. 300 kW, without Ex protection up to approx. 2 MW
- Voltage: 230 - 690 V
- Nominal diameter: DN 40 - DN 1200
Fields of application:
- Petrochemical, chemical and pharmaceutical industries
- Natural oil and gas extraction and distribution

- Industrial gases
Specific surface load
Specific surface load describes the heat transmission to the medium to be heated. The selection depends on the medium, the flow, pressure and installation conditions, as well as the medium temperature and the permissible surface temperature. High thermal efficiency is achieved through adapted specific surface load.
Guideline values:
Heavy fuel oil, gear oil, bitumen | 0,8 ... 1,0 W/cm² |
Hydraulic oil, lubricating oil. heat transfer oil | 1,5 ... 2,3 W/cm² |
Water/glycol | 2... 4 W/cm² |
Water | 4 ... 8 W/cm² |
Flowing gases | 0,5 ... 3 W/cm² |
Motor anticondensation heater, Room heater | 0,25... 0,4 W/cm² |
Materials
The materials are selected based on the customers’ requirements, the media to be heated, the temperatures and the ambient conditions.
- Heating bundle: Stainless steel 321, 316, Incolloy or according to the customer’s specifications.
- Flange or screw-in thread: Carbon steel, stainless steel 321 or 316, other materials according to the customer’s specifications.
- Connection housing made of cast iron or steel with paintwork for the highest industrial requirements or made of stainless steel 316
Pressure equipment
Immersion heaters that are part of pressure equipment are calculated, produced and accepted in accordance with the specifications of the Pressure Equipment Directive, ASME VIII or other regulations.
The grouping according to the PED in accordance with the conformity evaluation for the vessel must be specified by the customer.
